Tall Girl Pant Problem Solved!

The Inseam Struggle Is Real

As far back as I can remember, finding pants that were actually long enough has felt like a weird full-time side quest. I’m 5'10", and for years it was basically guaranteed: if the pants fit everywhere else, they’d be suspiciously “cropped” the second I took one step. And not the cute, intentional cropped. The accidental, why are my ankles out in February cropped.

I’ve tried to solve this in all the ways tall girls quietly do. Sometimes I just wear my husband’s pants around the house because, honestly, men’s sweatpants don’t play games, they come long and they come comfy. I’ve also bought men’s track pants just to lounge in, because at some point you realize you’d rather have pants that actually reach your feet than force yourself into another “tall” option that still floats above your socks.

And maybe it’s just me, but I actually love when pants drag on the floor sometimes. There’s something about a true long inseam that feels luxurious, like the pants are finally doing what they were meant to do: touch the ground. Especially right now, when 90s style is back in full force and baggy, flared, floor-skimming jeans are everywhere. The problem is… finding the right inseam is still a struggle. Here’s the annoying part: “tall” doesn’t always mean tall. Some brands label tall styles that feel made for someone who’s 5'8" with a 32" inseam (which is great for them, but not for me). Other brands go the opposite direction and their tall line feels like it’s only for women who are 6'2"+. And I’m just standing in the middle like… hi, I exist too.

For me, the sweet spot is usually around a 34" inseam. A 35" can be amazing depending on the style (and whether I’m wearing shoes), but sometimes it’s just a little too long. I don’t mind pants that hit above the ankle, but it completely depends on what look I’m going for. If I’m wearing leggings or a slim straight jean, ankle can look intentional. But if I’m trying to do that baggy/flare/90s vibe, I want the hem to hit the floor like it has plans.

The good news is that more brands are finally catching on and offering longer inseams that actually work. A few that have been wins for me lately:

01. Alo Suit Up Trouser 02. SPANX AirEssentials® Wide Leg Pant
03. ASOS DESIGN Tall contrast panel pants in gray 04. A&F High Rise Wide Leg Jean 05. Madewell The Tall Ultimate Wide-Leg Pant 06. Good American Good Legs Flare Jeans 07. American Tall Parachute Jogger for Tall Women 08. Gap High Rise Barrel Jeans 09. OFFLINE By Aerie The Hugger High Waisted Bootcut Legging

Tall girl friendly pants that I’m loving right now

Good American is a brand I keep coming back to, especially for denim. They really know how to make a good pair of jeans. The fabric is stretchy and soft (without feeling thin), and the fit is so forgiving in the belly area while still looking pulled together. For tall denim, they’ve been a standout. That said, Good American tall denim can feel like it’s made for really tall women, so depending on the style, it might run a little long (which is not the worst problem to have, but worth noting if you’re trying to avoid stepping on your hems all day).

Because I mostly live in activewear, I’ve also found some real wins outside of denim. Alo has longer inseam pants that are the perfect fit for me, especially when I want that long, sleek look without constantly yanking my waistband up or adjusting the hem. And I cannot talk about tall girl pants without mentioning Aerie. Their stretchy yoga pants are ridiculously soft, and I genuinely wish I owned 100 pairs. They stay in place, they don’t fall down, and the long length is actually a perfect long on me, which is rare. They’re the kind of pants you put on and immediately understand why you keep reaching for them.

Last but not least: Spanx. Their loungewear is next-level comfy and soft, and the fact that it comes in tall and hits the right length feels like a small miracle. When you find loungewear that’s cozy and doesn’t stop mid-shin, you hold onto it. At the end of the day, the tall girl pant struggle is real, but it’s also getting better. More brands are making longer inseams, more styles are trending that actually need length, and it’s becoming less normal for tall women to just accept “close enough.” Because once you find pants that hit the floor the right way, it’s hard to go back. And if you ever see me in men’s sweatpants at home… just know I’m not giving them up. The length is too good.
